Description

The D500X is an ultrasound recording unit intended for long-term, unattended recording of bat calls. The recorder is equipped with four slots for CF cards, which typically makes it possible to leave the unit in the field for more than a month. The triggering system allows the device to automatically start recording as a sound is detected. The software BatSound is an efficient, high-performance tool for various types of sound analysis. It is suitable for sound analysis in general, but also includes a number of features particularly useful to analyze bat calls recorded from a bat detector or recorded directly with a D500X or D1000X ultrasound detector.

Specification

Type: Direct, high-speed recording Microphone: Advanced electret, jack for external microphone Frequency range: 15 – 190 kHz (500 kHz sampling rate, high-pass filter enabled) Connections: External microphone, external trigger, external DC supply Timer: Four on/off periods per day Batteries: 4 x AA size, Alkaline or NiMH recommended External DC supply: 5.5-8 V, typically ca. 200 mA (average, when recording), depends on CF card type and number of CF cards Size: 165 x 170 x 53 mm, excl. connectors etc. Weight: 1.2 kg incl. batteries and front panel cover Recording system ADC resolution: 16 bits Anti-aliasing filter: Yes, 8th order, 190 kHz cut-off frequency Sampling rates: 44.1, 300, 500 kHz (optimized for 500 kHz) Recording length: 0.3, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20 sec or manual recording Recording medium: CF card, 4 slots

Batsound software specifications: BatSound uses any Windows compatible sound card for sound input and output. BatSound supports sound formats up to 32 bits with one or two channels (mono/stereo) and sampling frequencies up to 192 kHz (possibly limited by the sound card). The common WAV format is used to store files. It is also possible to open sound files with other formats such as mp3 and wma if the corresponding codecs have been installed on the computer. Multiple windows with different sound files can be opened at the same time, facilitating comparison of signals and analysis results. Printing and picture file export through Windows clipboard (BMP and WMF formats). Wide range zoom function. Optional time and frequency compensation of time expanded signals to show the original time and frequency. Play Speed function to implement time expansion playback of high-speed sound files from D500X/D1000X detectors. Open Next/Previous command makes it easy to scan through all files in a folder. Very useful for browsing files obtained through unattended recording. Automatic parameter extraction feature, calculates max/min frequency, pulse duration etc. Optional grid lines in most diagrams. Clipboard export of analysis results.

Services

D500X is designed for a long-term unattended recording of bat activity in the field. It stores the incoming ultrasound calls emitted by bats as time-stamped *.wav files that can be analysed later. It allows following bat activity in certain areas over periods up to one month without the actual presence of the researcher. BatSound software is a tool for analysing recorded bat calls. It allows identification of different bat species, also those that are difficult to distinguish in the field. Bat calls are showed graphically in several different ways and different parameters (e.g. frequences, call length, pulse intervals etc.) can be measured that allows very detailed analysis of both individual calls and sequences of many calls.
