Rapid determination of bacterial and eukaryotic total cell numbers in liquid samples (water, wastewater etc.). Additionally, discrimination between intact (alive) and membrane-damaged (dead) cells is possible. The technique enables cell discrimination with respect to cell size, nucleic acid concentration and presence of internal structures e.g. spores
