FT-ICR-MS is a mass spectrometry technique for detecting ions and determining the mass-to-charge ratio of ions based on their cyclotron frequency in a fixed strong magnetic field provided by the superconducting magnet. This differs significantly from other mass spectrometry techniques where ions are detected as they crash into an electron multiplier after being physically separated in time or space. In FT-ICR-MS ions are detected as they induce current in electrode plates by measurement of frequency which is sensitive and accurate, therefore FT-ICR-MS provides the very high mass spectrometric resolving power of up to 2 000 000 compared to about 800 for quadrupole mass spectrometry with electron multiplier. Ions are injected in the ion trap positioned inside the magnet bore from an external ionization source and the trapped ions can be excited and detected by the detection plates in the cell. The resolution of FT-ICR-MS is high enough that even the mass of electrons, which contribute very little to the mass of molecules in general, has to be taken into account. Due to the excellent performance FT-ICR-MS is useful in studying molecules in complex mixtures such as food, biomass, crude oil, waste, etc.
